tUnE-yArDs

Ryder Bach of The Body Parts turned me on to tUnE-yArDs a couple weeks ago. And, while the English major in me finds the alternating cases in Merrill Garbus’ nom de plume a little bit insane, her debut album, Bird-Brains is fantastic. A mix of low-fi ukelele, kitchen-sink percussion, sound snippets, and infectious, free-spirited vocals, the album is a pleasure from front to back. She is definitely one of the more singular artists I’ve heard in the last few months, with music that obviously appeals to the indie crowd but at no point feels derivative or compromised. A rare feat indeed.

Garbus is playing at the Echo this Thursday with Xiu Xiu, where she will be joined onstage by bassist/percussionist Nate Brenner. Should be an awesome show.
